The Alexander Technique teaches skilful "use of the self": how we move, how we stay
still, how we breathe, how we learn, how we organise our awareness and focus our
attention and, above all, how we choose our reactions in any situation. The Alexander
Technique is a learning process to improve the standard of neuro-muscular co-ordination.
It is a subtle and thoughtful discipline, but essentially practical. Based on the
realisation that better use of our self leads to better functioning, the AT teaches
us to recognize and change inefficient habits and provides the means of coming to
a better and healthier movement pattern. It works with respect for the structure
and mechanisms of the skeleton and muscles, helping to release inappropriate tension
and allowing the body to become better aligned and balanced.
Group class
Knowing about the skeleton helps to use it well, we therefore propose a daily class
devoted to discovering both what we know and what we imagine about our structure.
We will lead work explorations helping identify, recognise and acknowledge the skeleton.
This will involve individual, partner and group work. Travelling through space will
allow us to experience the body in larger movements and in relationship with others.
Individual lessons
In a one to one relationship, the teacher guides the pupil through verbal instruction
and a specific touch inherent to the technique. We will have the opportunity to
observe, read through books and articles about the technique and to ask questions.
